I took this photograph in May 2008 from the approximate position that the photograph taken by W. Benton from the Explosion series, depicting the miners housing known as "The Huts" would have been shot from (although I could not back up sufficiently to precisely replicate the perspective as the area landscape has been altered). See the 1913 Explosion Gallery #13 for comparison.

The Senghenydd War Memorial Clock Tower

The clock tower stands as the physical center of the village, located at the intersection of Commercial Street (left), High Street (right) and Gwern Avenue (which is to the left, out of frame). The tower was erected to commemorate the fallen heroes of the community who served in the two world wars. Photograph by Simon Barnett

Memorial to the miners who died in the 1901 and 1913 disasters

This memorial, located at the site of the Universal Colliery which was demolished, commemorates the 439 men who died in the explosion at Universal Colliery, Senghenydd, on October 14, 1913, and the 81 men who died in the earlier accident on May 24, 1901. The memorial was erected October 14, 1981 and stands approximately 25 feet high. Photograph by Simon Barnett
